MSG (RET) George Owen Helterbrand, 69, of Junction City, KS, passed away on February 17, 2021. Johnson Funeral Home is assisting the family with cremation arrangements.
   
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday March 5, 2021, 1pm, at the Kansas Veterans' Cemetery, 5181 Wildcat Creek Rd., Manhattan, KS.

George was born on February 1, 1952, in McAlester, Oklahoma, to James and Rosalee (Dupire) Helterbrand. At the young age of 17, he joined the United States Army and served honorably for over 30 yrs. He was stationed in many places both domestic and abroad. As a young man, he met Deborah Mae Starr, and they married on July 25, 1972. They ultimately settled in Junction City, KS after his retirement where they raised their small family. 

During his honorable service, he earned many awards and decorations that include but are not limited to: The Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal (w/ 3 oak leaf clusters), Presidential Unit Citation, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Army Good Conduct Medal, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal (w/ 1 silver and 2 bronze oak leaf clusters), National Defense Service Medal (w/ 2 stars), Armed Forces Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal (w/ 1 star), Noncommissioned Officer's Professional Development Ribbon (w/ Numeral 4), Overseas Service Ribbon, Driver/ Mechanic Badge, and Expert Marksman Badge .

George had many interests, but above all he was a loving husband, caring father and loyal friend.
He was also a Perpetual Life Member of Freemasonry in the Masonic Lodge of Kansas in Alta Vista.

He is survived by his loving family: wife, Deborah of Junction City, KS; daughter, Judith Mann and Son in Law Tony Mann both of Junction City, KS; two sons, David Helterbrand of Junction City, KS, and Eric Duntz of Junction City, KS; and a host of loving family and friends. 
  
George was preceded in death by his parents James and Rosalee Helterbrand both of Mesquite Texas, his brother James Harrold “Jimmy” Helterbrand of Garland, Texas and his sister Emily Dee Helterbrand-Jobe of Mesquite, Texas.
